Why do interviewers always ask: ‘What’s your biggest weakness?’

I know, it feels like a trap — but it’s really not. Here’s what they’re actually looking for.

They’re not trying to catch you off guard. What they’re looking for is self-awareness and growth mindset.

They want to know: Are you someone who can look at your own performance, admit where you struggle, and show that you’re working on it?

So your answer doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be real."

Here’s what to keep in mind when answering:

Let me share an example for a mid-senior Full Stack Developer who is actively working on their weakness:

“One area I’m working on is giving better time estimates for my tasks. I used to underestimate how long complex backend fixes would take.

Now, I break tasks down more clearly and add buffer time, which has helped improve my accuracy and team planning.”

Simple. Honest. Shows progress.

So next time they ask about your weakness, don’t panic. Show them you’re growing, not perfect.

Happy Job hunting!
